Brownies are a delicious baked good dessert that typically contain chocolate, eggs, butter, sugar, flour, salt, and vanilla extract. These are the traditional ingredients, but the variations are endless.

The legend about the creation of brownies is that, in 1893, a prominent Chicago socialite named Bertha Palmer who owned the Palmer House Hotel asked a pastry chef for a dessert that could be included in boxed lunches as there were ladies attending the Chicago World's Columbian Exposition.

The ingredients are similar to what is used for a chocolate cake, but a brownie is denser and heavier than a cake.

Today, brownies do not have to be brown or contain chocolate. They can be vanilla, marshmallow, caramel or even lemon. This cookbook contains recipes for traditional brownies as well as dozens of delectable variations.

Great book, but the last dozen or so recipes were repeated and printed in the book. I’ve never seen this sort of mistake before. Book not proofread!

But loved the variety of brownie recipes. Lots to try.
