One masterpiece by one of the top two or three (In only can think about Eça and Camilo at the same level) greatest writers ever in the Portuguese language. Ironic, simple to read, caustic, and engaging. No one writes like Machado.

Very nice story written by the best Brasilian writer ever. It tells us a lot of about the "rules" of our society and it's amazing how Machado de Assis makes us to think about what had happened between Bentinho and Capitu without giving a final word.

One of the greatest classics of the Portuguese language literature, hands down a must read. I'm not going to go into the work itself, it has been out there for over one hundred years. I'm going to focus on the digital edition, that is great, very well formated. I noticed a few glitches, like what looks like the page numbers of a book it might have been scanned from, but overall it is fine. Kudos to the editing crew.

5.0 out of 5 stars Um livro profundo, e realmente bom.

2.0 out of 5 stars Typos and missing punctuation

There are lots of typos. Some words are not properly written (and not because of the old-fashioned language considering when the book was published), but there is a lack of an editor review and missing punctuation.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Brazilian version of a Shakespearean comedy (minus the rhyming couplets)
Reviewed in Canada on September 24, 2020
Remember those days when growing up in a Catholic household the mother always wanted the male child to enter into Seminary School so they could become a priest? After all, mothers know best. And maybe win some celestial favour.

Our stubborn young Bentinho has his path made clear thanks to mom. But like every great story, why not add in a love interest, Capitu. Talk about a monkey wrench. Temptation is too great; temptation is a sin as well. Add in SenhorJosé Dias, Tío Cosme and prima Justina for commentary and moral reflection. Add in a good friend Escobar from the Seminary to widen our young Bentinho and Sancha to tempt. Bentinho is a very jealous man; envious of everyone.

What a true comedy of errors. A real treat to read.
