O historiador Marco Morel levou 15 anos elaborando o livro que inicia com uma síntese daquele evento, do qual resultaram: o único Estado nacional oriundo de uma insurreição de escravos no mundo; e, nas Américas, o primeiro país a abolir a escravatura e a segunda proclamação de Independência. Apesar dainvisibilidade construída, tais episódios e seus personagens eram bem conhecidos entre as elites letradas – e além delas. Os ecos dos acontecimentos constituíram "fantasmas" mas encontraram, também, recepção favorável no Brasil entre setores diversos da sociedade. O silêncio do passado é eloquente. De impensável, o acolhimento da Revolução do Haiti tornou-se inaceitável, não-dito.
