What was most surprising about this deliciously crazy adventure, similar in its humor to the Brazilian's Nonsense of Stanislaw Ponte Preta, was that this might have been one of the most radically feminist books I have read lately. In this satire several Brazilian cultural attitudes are confronted with humor. Irreverence is juxtaposed by common popular sayings that slowly build and question many of the Brazilian cultural assumptions regarding women and their position in society. [She is] "Ugly, but has a beautiful body" is just one among many sayings heard commonly in conversations that help portray and question what indeed would be the necessary, essential, irrefutable, women's attributions in this culture. The fact that it is an ugly woman the one devoted to books and studies, is just another among many beliefs, rarely spoken, but firmly entrenched in Brazilian society. But these criticisms are light and do not interfere on the romp. Nor do they apppear as sermons. All is set in a fast, dizzying pace, which gives the reader no time to think. There are many levels to enjoy in this book. Allusions and new ways of interpreting Biblical facts are pleasant and surprising. And they offer yet another way to laugh and smile, and enjoy a comedy of manners, with the nonsense so typical of Brazilian humor. Five stars.

Já li esse romance há alguns anos, mas até hoje sorrio à lembrança de sua graça e do texto belíssimo criado por Scliar para fazer falar sua heroína plena de graça, humor, malícia e inteligência. Sendo a mais feia das mulheres do rei Salomão, detinha um poder que a singularizava - sabia escrever. Foi-lhe, pois, dada a missão de escrever a história da Humanidade, o que ela faz dia a dia, com uma verve toda própria, que a singulariza enquanto ser excluído duplamente - feia e mulher, usa a palavra não apenas para viver, mas para recriar um mundo todo outro, todo novo, sobre o qual tem domínio absoluto. E nos põe cativos, a seus pés. Imperdível.
