Dr. Dursun Delen is the holder of Spears Endowed Chair in Business Administration, Patterson Family Endowed Chair in Business Analytics, Director of Research for the Center for Health Systems Innovation, and Regents Professor of Management Science and Information Systems in the Spears School of Business at Oklahoma State University (OSU). Dr. Delen has over 30 years of experience in analytics both as a business consultant and university professor. Prior to his academic tenure, he worked for a privately-owned research and consultancy company as a research scientist for five years, during which he led a number of decision support, information systems and advanced analytics related research projects funded by federal agencies including DoD, NASA, NIST and DoE. Dr. Delen has published more than 150 peer-reviewed articles and 11 books/textbooks. He is often invited to national and international conferences for keynote addresses, and companies for consultancy engagements on topics related to business analytics, data science, data/text mining, and knowledge management. He regularly serves as chair for tracks and mini-tracks at various business analytics and information systems conferences. Currently, he is serving on more than a dozen journal editorial boards as editor-in-chief, senior editor, associate editor, and editorial board member. He is the recipient of several research and teaching awards including the prestigious Fulbright scholar, regents distinguished teacher and researcher, and Big Data mentor awards.

Embora esteja na 4ª edição, os cases, exemplo e referências são antigas. A fonte mais nova que lembro de ter lido é 2016. O livro chega a citar artigos de 2003, 2007 em uma área que evoluiu drasticamente desde então. E esse é o maior problema do livro.

O livro é bom para iniciantes ou para alguém que quer ter uma visão mais macro. O livro fala sobre sistemas de informação (OLAP, OLTP) BI, modelos estatísticos, infraestrutura (data warehouses). Para conceitos, o livro é muito bom, mas para se aprofundar é preciso recorrer a outra fonte. Sim, na minha opinião o livro poderia ser um pouco mais profundo, um pouquinho a mais.

A parte de análises, métodos e técnicas é bem fraca. Dá um bom overview, mas se você procura algo mais denso, não vale a pena. Eu já tinha bom conhecimento e queria justamente o contrário, uma visão mais geral, entender um pouquinho mais sobre BI, DWs, DLs, bases não relacionais... e de fato, aprendi um pouquinho, bem pouquinho hehe...

Pra resumir, se você é gestor ou está iniciando na área, este livro pode ser um bom começo pra ter uma visão macro que, geralmente, cursos não oferecem. Ciência de dados não é só machine learning. E Power BI não é tudo que existe!

No entanto, não se apegue às ferramentas e exemplos, pois está pelo menos uns 7 anos atrasados do estado da arte.
